It's interesting to see how many people are now able to work from home considering that just a few weeks ago their employers were against the very idea. Now employees are not only able to work from home but they're also encouraged to do so.
Once this pandemic is over, employees will now be able to go to their employers and ask to work from home - they no longer can say "this isn't possible" because of course it's possible you were just not allowing it in the past.
This idea that employees needs to be in the same building is an industrial age mentality. Before, all employees HAD to be in the same building in order to produce the work but now some of those jobs have shifted to being mostly done on computers.
Why, then, are companies still wanting their employees on site? Part of it is for ease of access to the information. When you're on site you're obviously easily accessible. Another part of it is that employers simply don't think that employees would be as productive if they worked from home. This is justified considering that I've seen this first hand with the company I worked for. About 10 years ago, the company tried to let a few people work from home and found that they were actually not working at all. Not all employees have the discipline necessary to do this.
One thing is for sure is that the Pandemic has forced changed into the business world and not all of it is bad. Hopefully, this will open the eyes to some companies to let their employees more flexibility when it comes to working from home.
