Paying to Test

It's not uncommon for game companies to include a beta test as part of their pre-order promotions and one has to wonder why customers are paying to test? Shouldn't that be, at the very least, free to all?
Mind you, the idea is marketing genius but it makes for a pretty lame pre-order bonus. In a way, it's like paying for the right to work for the company.

There are a couple of reasons why a company may choose the exclusive beta access route. They may feel like their game is not good enough for the public and letting everyone play would have a negative impact on sales. On the other hand, maybe they restricted numbers helps companies determine the processing power requirement for their online functionalities.

Regardless of the reason behind it, the sad part is that it works and that practice is as strong today as it ever was. I just wish it would die - I hate this type of pre-order bonus!
